Employee showing his happiness in his career

How to Love Your Job

They say “money can’t buy love.” If this is true, then it means that if we don’t love what we do, a higher salary won’t make us more fulfilled.

In an ideal world, we would all find perfect jobs that keep us satisfied forever, much like finding a so-called soulmate. But let’s remember that, in the real world, happiness is a subjective and conscious effort. What matters is not to look for a constant high, but a sustainable one—in good and challenging times.

Let’s take a look at some of the steps you need to take to find work that you will love:

1.) Be specific in what you are looking for. Manage your expectations by managing yourself. Find jobs that align with your salary expectations, job descriptions, abilities and values. You’ll stand more chance of a long-lasting relationship with your employer if you have a clear list of expectations, objectives, and what you are willing to compromise on. Look closely at principles that you value most and jot down your non-negotiables.

2.) Be patient but proactive. Much like love, it is important to be proactive. While good things come to those who wait, great things come to those who are willing to make things happen. Write a cover letter as if it were a love letter to the company. Customize it according to the job posting, tell the company why you would love to work for them and send that application! It may very well be the job of your dreams.

3.) Find a job that is perfect for you. When accepting a job offer, make sure you are doing it for yourself; not just to impress your friends or to please your parents. Focusing on other people is a recipe for disappointment in the long-term. What career makes you happy, fulfilled and inspired? Being honest with yourself will make you thrive in your chosen field.

4.) Your career is your responsibility. Human beings like to feel that we are part of something, but just like in personal relationships, it is important to know that you can’t depend on one person alone for constant happiness. Take charge of your own growth, may it be professionally or personally. Invest in yourself, learn new skills and garner experiences. Most importantly, make a sincere improvement and contribution when it’s called for. This will make you a better partner.

5.) It’s all about perspective. There’s no such thing as a perfect company. And in reality, the grass is usually not greener on the other side. The best way to be happy with your career is by choosing to be. Let your mindset eliminate the negatives, and dwell on the positives. Be content with your current situation, while continuing to strive to be better. Everything is a work in progress, which is what makes life exciting.

Your vision for yourself and your priorities will light your way to the happy career that you seek. We will have to make decisions to get there and we’ll make mistakes along the way. When we do, we just need to go back to number 1 on this list to rediscover what makes us happy again. What’s most important is that we enjoy our life’s journey and the experiences it sends our way. Good luck!
