Woman happy with her job

7 Tips To Start Loving Any Job

Ask the person beside you if they love their job, chances are you’ll get an unenthusiastic “yes” at best. It doesn’t take much to find out that most Filipinos wish they got more satisfaction from their work. Although the main priority of any job is to provide income to cover our living expenses, we also long for a job that makes us happy. This is totally justified since work takes up most of our time during the week.

Why does job satisfaction keep falling short? For starters, many of us have this misconception that the only jobs that matter are the ones we see our favorite celebrities doing. And we think that we can only be happy with our work when we end up in the same jobs as them.

The reality is that not all people are talented and lucky enough to end up in high profile roles. So while waiting for your lucky break, here are 7 tips that will make you start loving any job.

Tip #1: Think positive

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” – Hellen Keller

Positive thinking is said to be the key that lets happiness come into a person’s life. However, this can be challenging when we are faced with so many things to complain about during each work day. When these negative thoughts creep in, make a conscious effort to set them aside. The best way to do this is to keep busy. The sense of accomplishment in achieving your daily goals will overshadow these negative thoughts.

Tip #2: Stay away from gossip

“Gossip is what no one claims to like, but everybody enjoys.” – Joseph Conrad

Gossip is a useless activity that will surely infect you with negativity. There’s no other way to deal with it aside from treating it like radioactive waste that can cause cancer. In short, stay far away from it!

Tip #3: Make a to-do list

“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” – Alexander Graham Bell

List your tasks for the next day. This will help keep you focused and on track during the work day as soon as you clock in. Include easy tasks in your list too. You’ll also feel more productive as you cross out your list one by one.

Tip #4: Declutter your workstation

“Cleaning and organizing is a practice not a project.” – Meagan Francis

You will be more motivated to come to work when a clean and orderly environment is the first thing that you see every day. To pump yourself up even more, keep a picture of your loved ones in your station. It will remind you why you are working so hard.

Tip #5: Get to know your workmates

One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood. – Lucious Annaeus Seneca

Be interested in what your coworkers enjoy. This will help you maintain a friendly and supportive relationship with them. Assist them in their times of need and they will do the same for you, making your work easier.

Tip #6: Be curious

“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.” – William Morris

Find out how your work affects the bigger picture. Ask questions like, how does it help my team? How does it help the company’s customers? This will give your work more meaning and motivate you to do your best.

Tip #7: Strive to be the better

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is best.” – St. Jerome

Finding ways to work faster and more efficiently is proven to make work more enjoyable. Strive to deliver results that are better than what you produced the previous day. Doing this will make your days go by faster, and before you know it, it’s already the weekend!

When we’re stressed and demotivated with work, our instinct is to explore opportunities elsewhere. However, it’s very possible that we will encounter the same challenges at the new company that we move to. Not to mention the fact that we’ll have to adjust to a new environment, coworkers and managers.

By practicing these tips, a career move might not be necessary and, who knows, you could even fall in love with your current job!
